From September 23-29, 2016, Kyiv will be the site of several events related to the commemoration of the tragedy at Babyn Yar. Among these will be an exhibit of modern and contemporary art focusing on themes of the Holocaust and genocide; a cinema series with films related to Babyn Yar, the Holocaust, and the Nazi occupation of Ukraine; and a multi-media display on the history of Babyn Yar.

LOSS. In Memory of Babi Yar

PinchukArtCentre presents "LOSS. In Memory of Babi Yar," an international group exhibition including the works of Christian Boltanski, Berlinde De Bruyckere and Jenny Holzer.

The exhibition coincides with the commemoration of the tragedy at Babi Yar ravine in Kyiv, 75 years ago. More than 34.000 Jews were killed over the course of two days by German forces in an act that became known as one of the first mass killings during the Second World War. 

"LOSS. In Memory of Babi Yar" considers the tragedy through a new monumental work by Christian Boltanski, while silently bridging tragic events around the word and throughout history. 

The theme of forgetfulness of the collective memory, central in the work of Boltanksi, runs throughout all works in the exhibition. Simultaneously Berlinde De Bruyckere and Jenny Holzer confront us with the risk of losing our sense of humanity in the face of a violent death. With older works such as Lustmord Table (1994) by Jenny Holzer, the act of a violent killing itself becomes a central subject. And Berlinde De Bruyckere, with three newly produced monumental sculptures, reflects on the theme of collective death.
